All spiritual practices on one side: Going to places of worship, praying or meditating so many times a day, yoga, breathing exercises, ...
And striving to perfect one's character on the other.
If you are not committed to the latter, the former is of no use whatsoever. Zero. It's just more fluff in your life. Worse, it will make you a hypocrite. You will walk around "feeling spiritual", but on the inside you stay the same you: insincere, greedy, power mongering.
First commit to perfecting your character. That's the core, the backbone, of spirituality.
Then some spiritual techniques can be used to have a quieter mind and a more flexible body and use these in the most positive way possible for yourself as well as society at large.
Many many people get the above upside down.
Always remember: Ravan was a theist and used to practice spiritual disciplines. But his character remained dodgy, he ended up killing his own sister's husband for power and kidnapping another man's wife. His "spirituality" and "devotion to God" was of no use whatsoever.
Character! Watch your character and be honest to yourself :)! That's the first step :)!
PS: No, character does not mean vegetarianism (consult your nutritionist and if your body needs a certain amount of meat, give it that much - but no more) or arranged marriage (just don't use and hurt people in the name of dating).
Be sincere, be authentic, be compassionate, work hard.
