A Question of Worthiness

Today is the fourteenth anniversary of 26/11, and I feel restless again. It's not just the memories of that particular day. It's no longer just the anger I felt at the irresponsibility and shamelessness displayed by our media in providing "live coverage" that probably diluted the effectiveness of our military's operation and cost us more innocent lives. It's not just the mix of sadness and pride I felt when I heard of the sacrifices of Police ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte, Assistant Sub-Inspector Shri Tukaram Gopal Ombale, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and others, including the staff at Taj, who made the ultimate sacrifice: they gave up their very lives to save others. So many more brave men and women have made this ultimate sacrifice since then and so many earlier - each an expression of complete selflessness and sacrifice so that all of us can live our lives and fulfill our aspirations. These sacrifices stare unblinkingly at me, they force me to introspect, and several thoughts that probably lurked in the recesses of my mind surface, collide with each other, and eventually crystallize into one single question, a question that continuously haunts...

As the 26/11 drama unfolded publicly, I wondered to myself: what might be the spectrum of personalities that were at the Taj that night? One has to be seriously rich or seriously well connected to afford a stay at that hotel. And though I admit it may be rather unfair, my own middle class upbringing combined with observations of most who qualify as "rich and mighty" makes me view the elite and wealthy with a hint of suspicion - their mode of wealth creation, their priorities, their culture, their humanity... There are exceptions surely: those who have earned their riches with integrity, through a tremendous application of the will and unceasing dedication; those who have not snatched from another's plate or exploited others to fill their coffers; those who have uplifted all around them in their upward journey to the stars. But in my observation and experience such exceptions are few and far between. Compromises, corruption, exploitation, sycophancy and perhaps a large chunk of luck seem to be the stepping stones for most others. Quite probably a sizeable section of the guest list at the Taj that night were from this second category. I wonder...have these people lived a life worthy of someone else's?

But the issue is not just about the rich and their worthiness. The issue is not just about what happened that night at the Taj. 26/11 was a resounding slap on our face that jolted us out of our stupor. One of the reasons it had such a strong effect on us is that we have become insensitive to the sacrifices being made by our armed forces almost on a daily basis. Ever awake, ever alert, unmindful of what it costs them, thousands and thousands of jawans and officers protect our borders while putting their own lives at stake; accepting each challenge without a murmur of complaint, braving the elements: from the Himalayas to the Thar desert, out on the rocky seas and up high above in the skies.

These heroes have made their choice: the choice to sacrifice themselves for one and all without any bias or judgment. The cost they bear does not distinguish between upright citizens and thieves and robbers, a few noble political leaders who work selflessly for their country's progress and development and the innumerable corrupt politicians who are unapologetically and callously squeezing the very blood from this country's veins to serve their own self-interests, teachers who educate and enlighten and the increasingly misled youth who are going astray and putting immediate indulgence and short term pleasures above their commitment to evolving into worthy members of a society that is civilized in the true sense of the word.

But this does pose a dilemma for our conscience, does it not? And I don't mean to use the word "our" in an abstract sense. I mean very specifically each and every one of us - including me and you. Are we living a life that is worthy of someone else willing to sacrifice his or hers? Sacrifices are meant to be made for things that are great and noble. Are we living great lives? Noble lives? Perhaps not.

Forget greatness and nobility actually. Let's talk of simple things first. Do we even practice a bare minimum set of human values that would qualify us as a civilized society? Are we honest? Do we do our jobs sincerely and without any element of corruption? Are we courteous and polite with the people we interact with everyday? Do we treat each other with a sincere sense of respect? Do we respect and honor our women? Do we take care of our elders in their old age? Do we appreciate the efforts of those who provide services to us - the rickshaw-wallah, the maid servant, janitorial staff, the post man, the staff at our banks, the railway ticket window staff, ticket checkers - and thank them for the same? Do we treat those who are less fortunate than us with compassion and do what we can to help alleviate their misery? These are some of the basic behavioral patterns anyone would expect to see in a civilized society. To be frank, I don't see enough of this happening.

Then comes the issue of self respect and respect for our country. It is all very well to sing the National Anthem twice a year. But what do we really mean when we thump our chests and pronounce ourselves "Indians"? Do we simply mean we hold an Indian passport? Or is there really an Indian-ness that is unique to us, a cultural identity that we express with pride? Globalization and personal tastes aside, are we proud of our culture, our heritage, our art, our music, our languages, our philosophy, our values? Do we treat our fellow country men and women with as much respect as we treat foreigners? Are we ambassadors of our identity as a country to the rest of the world? Or are we desperate for acknowledgment and appreciation from the outside?

Please understand one thing clearly: If all that arises in your mind when I use the terms culture and heritage are negatives such as casteism, untouchability, the way widows were treated, etc. then you just don't know our culture and heritage well enough. Every part of the world has had negative aspects in its history. So did we and we are continuously correcting ourselves. But we have tremendous beauty and positivity in our culture and heritage as well. And we have every right to feel proud of who we are and express ourselves confidently on the world stage.

Unless we treat each other as our own, behave accordingly and live lives of the highest integrity and dignity, unless we are comfortable with who we are and take pride in our identity, unless we truly believe that we, as an independent country, will collectively shape our destiny in our own unique way, based on ideals that we believe in and aspirations that will make us truly happy, do we really deserve that we be protected at the cost of so many lives?

Yet, those who have sworn to protect us continue their vigil unceasingly without asking us any of these questions, without placing any demands on us. That's quite something, isn't it?

You see...its a question of worthiness.

Are we worthy? Worthy of someone sacrificing his or her life so that we may live ours? This is an important question in my opinion and calls for honest introspection. And if the answer is in the negative, maybe its time to start changing for the better.

Sulli Deals Bulli Deals Flip Flop

To start with, I thank everyone who is working systematically to expose sick behaviour like the below on all sides. Please work in collaboration with our police and legal system. Never take the law in your own hands. That only makes the situation worse.

Found out about the #SulliDeals #BulliBai stuff pretty much as we entered 2022.

Sick! Criminal!

The discourse dips further every single day. As if there isn't even a rock bottom from where we can rise up again.
I'm glad our law and order system cracked down on it and arrested the culprits!

I often say that while we love pointing fingers at others and blaming them, we ourselves aren't always clean. In fact, we are often criminal. Asifa Bano's abduction, rape and murder was one example. Sulli Deals and Bulli Bai are another example. There are many more if you look!

But unfortunately we live in times when there's often just the same stink on the other side. I invite you to view the following video:

Equally disgusting. Equally unacceptable. Equally criminal.

Thanks @AskAnshul on twitter for this expose.

Many of us are championing #secularism (my tweets, facebook posts and blog articles continuously attest to my sincerity). But be assured, all sides have to behave themselves.

I emphasize repeatedly: The cause of ensuring we stay a peaceful, multi-religious, #secular society can be realized only if all parties conduct themselves with dignity.

I end this post by again thanking everyone who is working systematically to expose sick behaviour on all sides. Please work in collaboration with our police and legal system. Never take the law in your own hands. That only makes the situation worse.

Bhutan's Highest Paid Civil Servants

Did you know that the highest paid civil servants in Bhutan are teachers and medical staff?

I invite you to read this article: https://indianexpress.com/article/india/web/in-bhutan-teachers-medical-staff-will-now-be-highest-paid-civil-servants-5776604/

There is tremendous long term wisdom in this decision! These are the seeds one must sow for development in its true sense. This is how a society starts evolving in the right direction.

Netherlands' Invisible Bike Lanes

Have a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1l75QqRR48

They need to play this on the big screen at every climate meeting just to set the tone. This, to me, is the first collective step we need to take to cut down fossil fuel consumption.

I would absolutely love to see Indian cities taking this up!

Making Relationships Work

Strange thing this.

People spend their whole lives trying to make relationships work. Ought to be the other way around! Your relationships/friendships should be making your life work.

Let the children play

If I can win you over with love
Why would I wage wars?
If my pen can make you shake my hand Why would I shoot bullets? But yes! If your hand moves to draw the sword Its your head that will roll first! I believe we both have this strength And that's only fair.

So come now, let's let the peace prevail!
So come now, let's let the children play!

Physical Attractiveness: Not An "Essential Qualification"!

When I take a flight, I look for the following qualities in flight attendants:

1. Efficiency.
2. Courtesy.
3. The confidence that they are trained and fit to handle emergency situations.

That's it.

Neither gender nor how "physically attractive" they are plays any role whatsoever in my mind.

It's your level of skill and competence that needs to count, not how "good looking" you are.

Is this how flight attendants are hired today?

(And stretching Point 3 further: Aren't track suits and sneakers the best possible uniform for flight attendants, police personnel and every profession where athleticism is of paramount importance and not fashion and "looks"?)

Note: My use of " " for the phrases "physically attractive", "good looking" and "looks" is to firmly emphasize that beautiful cannot be stereotyped. Glow with goodness from within and keep yourself fit - that's it - you're then quite beautiful!

Apportioning Blame for Hindutva Nationalism

If you see my blog posts and tweets, you will see my unquestionable commitment to secularism. So I make the following remark without any underlying hypocrisy:

Those journalists and politicians who remained quiet when the Kashmiri Pandit Exodus happened, when Malda happened, when NLFT killed:

A large part of the blame for BJP getting elected and the "Hindutva Nationalism" of today rests squarely on *your* shoulders. *You* allowed the balance to tilt so heavily on one side that masses pushed back.

We'll course correct still. But never repeat this mistake again.

Strength!

want nothing from you.

I cannot be bought.
I will not bend.
I will not sell out for anything.
What is right is right
And I'm standing my ground.

Established in the contentment of my Self. This! Come on!
This!

Strength!

Atheism Vs Inhumane Believers

Someone praying or going to religious places is no guarantee in itself that they are good and trustworthy.

Even Ravan was a devotee of Shiva!

Observe people. Observe how they treat others. Observe if they are helpful, kind, compassionate.
Observe if they are sincere.

Prayer is useful only if conducted with the intention of purifying oneself and with a commitment to live a sincere, helpful, kind and compassionate life.

Else, no :).

Better an atheist than believers with dodgy characters. Any day!

Worshipping Lord Vishnu

One of the most spiritually elevated statements I have ever heard is simply this:

"Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye jo peed paraayi jaane re"

Translation: "Call them the true devotees of Vishnu who are sensitive to the suffering of others."

If this sensitivity is not blossoming in you, whichever religion or spiritual path you might belong to and no matter how much you pray or what offerings you make, it's worth this much: Zero. You will not progress an inch - at least not in the right direction.

What else but love?

Maybe this is all a part of the awakening.

You kind of feel hurt
No one's said anything and the evening was quite alright
Ached into silence look around
Only the flowers and the leaves and the trees make sense
Everything else a din and meaningless cackle
Even laughter shrieks
as if cruel and mocking by nature

Just how it is.

Except when love elicits the laughter

Head falling back, Eyes closing
Silence and completeness

And you smile.

Power!

Power in itself isn't much to talk about.

Even pimps have a sense of power. They hold sway over others' lives, they oppress, they exploit, they hurt.

If that's all you do with your power, you're just a pimp.

But to use your power to uplift, to liberate, to support, to shield, to protect. That's something.

If that's the kind of power you possess, it's worth a mention.

Else, no.

From Untruth To Truth

Here's one of my favorite prayers. Here the Universal Divine Consciousness is addressed as Om. You can address the same as Ishwar, Bhagwaan, God or Allah. There's only one Universal Divine Consciousness and it is beyond all names, forms and classifications.

First in Sanskrit:

असतो मा सद्गमय
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय
मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय
ॐ शांतिः शांतिः शांतिः।

In English:

O Universal Divine Consciousness
Take me
From Untruth to Truth
From Darkness of Ignorance to Enlightenment
From Identification with the Mortal Body to Immortal Spirit
Let there be Peace Peace Peace

Beautiful, isn't it 😊? So simple, dignified, to the point 😊.

And what glorious ends to pray for 😊!

Economic Models: Time & Tide

Anyone talking about "ending socialism" in India is plain cuckoo.

Public healthcare, education and transport cannot go from this country till poverty ends. The government must also maintain a significant stake in food, energy, defense and space.

At the same time, I don't see why private enterprise should be limited. If someone's willing to invest, create, manufacture, employ, expand : great!

We simply adopt the best from every economic model out there as we move forward.

Let the focus be on solving problems. Why constrain ourselves one way or another?

Globalize But Reject Your Neighbors?

We talk about the value of exposing ourselves to cultures all over the world, exchanging views, enriching ourselves by absorbing whatever is good.

Yet, what's right next door to us discomforts us: North - South, Bengali - Punjabi, Religion 1 - Religion 2, Left - Right, ...

Do you see the dichotomy? Drop it. Rise above this stupidity. There's much joy being lost and time doesn't come back.

Make Religion A Conscious Choice

A whole lot of religious strife in the world would just disappear if parents and teachers told their children this when growing up:

"Son/Daughter, It will be your choice as a free human being as to which religion(s) you subscribe to, if any. Understand that everyone else has the same right to choice. If any Guru, Preacher or Scripture asks you to insult or injure people of faiths different from yours, simply know that to be a mediocre intelligence at work. Stay sincere, righteous and open minded. Be kind and compassionate, but when needed do not be afraid of fighting to protect the oppressed."

This is the seed we need to sow in young fertile minds, see that?

Humility: Not A Choice

A wise man once remarked:

"Either we bow with grace and humility that arise from within or knocks that drive out all arrogance come from outside to humble us and make us bend. In reality nature doesn't give us a choice but to be humble. Just that the first way is so much more beautiful!"

That's really quite true, isn't it :)? I'm yet to see arrogance last endlessly anywhere :)!

Be humble. Confidence is fine, arrogance not. Stay humble.

Formalize हम दो हमारे दो

One thing that would be great to see not just in India, but the world over, is incentives to have no more than two children in a marriage - and disincentives for more than two children - regardless of race, religion, caste, ethnicity, etc.

Contraception as well as sterilization (male as well as female) can be encouraged to achieve the above goal.

Population control will help increase the quality of life as well as reduce the load we are putting on our economic and environmental resources.
