Applied Mathematics in India

Here are the Top 10 Applied Math departments in the US as per one ranking:

NYU, UCLA, Brown, MIT, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Princeton, U Minnesota - Twin Cities, Stanford, UT Austin.

Pretty impressive list, isn't it? Other rankings might shuffle them or name some other universities in the top 10. But you get the general idea: Applied Math is a respected discipline by the world's best universities!

And many of the supposedly elite mathematicians in supposedly elite Indian universities and institutes actually say things like: "Applied Math will not find respect in our department", "Oh but that is Physics or Engineering - its not really Math!", etc.

What a combination of arrogance and ignorance! Seventy five years of independence, almost no breakthroughs that have caught the world's attention, and yet, these people know what "real mathematics" is supposed to be!

Its laughable really! If only it weren't academically tragic!
