I post this with due respect (and sincere apologies 😅) for my friends in the west. I'm willing to bet it was not Swami Vivekananda's intent to generalize (he was too intelligent and did too much to bring about global harmony to be caught up in stereotypes). But sometimes one fights fire with fire 😅, and today, regretfully, it is many of my own countrymen (and women) who need to hear this more than folks in other parts of the world:
Questioner (Boston, 1893): "Can’t you wear proper clothes to look like a gentleman?”
Swami Vivekananda (with a smile and in all politeness): “In your culture, a tailor makes a gentleman; but, in our culture, Character makes gentleman.”
