Gautam Buddha has been so deeply misunderstood as someone who "abandoned" his family! Here's the point to realize: His leaving home in search for enlightenment was an event at a point when he *wasn't* enlightened! And upon attaining enlightenment, he came right back! In fact, his wife became one of his students!
He was restless for truth and felt that the best possible shot he had at discovering it was
to be on his own. You and I may feel differently, but we are not talking about you and I.
We are talking about Siddhartha and need to understand him from his perspective!
His family was certainly well provided for. Perhaps fearing that he would be unable to leave when everyone was awake, he simply left a note and slipped away in the middle of the night when everyone was asleep.
How many of us are restless for truth and enlightenment to start with? Let's first get there, make these our highest priorities, then we can always decide on a path that we feel will be best for us.
