This is an important post:
IITs/IISERs/IIITs/NITs and every other public (or premier private) university/institute in our country has to be very very selective about whom they keep on on contractual appointments after retirement.
Some professors are wise and stay sharp with their teaching and research even in their senior years. Many aren't. They're just dodos who entered academia through pushes and pulls, have kept us back for decades, and continue to pull us down even after retirement.
Most importantly, no administrative assignments or committee involvements for a single day beyond retirement. The surest sign that an institute is going to spiral down is retired folks clinging on to head-ships and dean-ships and deputy-director-ships. If one anticipates very high quality teaching and research from someone for some more years, keep them. If not, wish them well but let them continue their post-retirement careers elsewhere.
This may sound harsh but its the right thing to do if we are to aspire for a better future.
