Tackling Excess Rainfall / Floods / Droughts

I met a Professor from the Water Resources Group at IIT Roorkee recently who told me that solutions are available for collecting water in regions that receive excess rainfall at a rapid rate and storing it. This would of course have two benefits: (1) Prevent / reduce the agricultural damage due to flooding in that area itself and (2) Make water available in that or other regions at other times when there is water scarcity.

The challenge it seems is convincing states to come together and put in the money to execute these solutions.

This is pretty sad! We lose so much crop every year due to either flooding or drought. Then there are massive concerns about water scarcity in general. To have inter state squabbles come in the way of solving these problems is not just unfortunate, its plain criminal.

I hope this post reaches the right people and has them thinking about and committed to solving this problem.
