One can try and justify Dronacharya having Ekalavya cut his thumb in a hundred different ways: Ekalavya the ideal disciple / Guru's right to ask for Guru Dakshina as he wishes / ...
The plain truth is: Dronacharya was wrong. Period. He may have been the best archery teacher in the world, but he was very far from being enlightened.
I would choose to teach one Ekalavya over a hundred Arjunas. Any day.
Arjuna was a prince. He had the resources to access any teacher he wished for.
Ekalavya, a simple tribal boy who, despite being refused instruction by Dronacharya, observed from a distance and practiced, practiced, practiced, till he surpassed even Arjuna in skill. And all this while, he still acknowledged Dronacharya as his Guru!
Ekalavyas. We need
students the calibre of Ekalavya. We get that and we become first world in 25
years. Everything will fall in place if we just have that burning, crazy,
sincerity and intensity of Ekalavya.
