An Unpleasant Academic Association

Most folks connected with me here are aware of my stint with Sitare Foundation, an educational NGO started by Amit Singhal, Ex SVP Google. From August 2022 to January 2023 I interacted with and taught students who are extremely bright but hail from families that are grappling with severe financial circumstances. Very rarely have I seen students this committed and it was an absolute pleasure teaching them.

Many many colleagues, friends and well wishers have asked me the following question: If my experience was so academically fulfilling, why did I leave?

I will keep my answer brief, but I think it's important that I answer and clear the air.

A couple of weeks before classes started in September 2022, I came across this article and it sort of shook me up: Google paid former executive $35m after sexual assault allegation | Google | The Guardian (ampproject.org)

However, to my credit, I did NOT take it at face value (else I would have bailed out right then) and decided to make up my own mind after interacting with folks and observing the ground reality for myself.

Result: I left as soon as the semester ended.

I don't want to say anything more.

If you ask me, would you send your children to study here? I would answer: If my financial circumstances were so dire that I hadn't any other choice, I would. But if I had other choices, I would explore before making up my mind. I definitely don't see this option as my "top option" (or even a preferred option).

But that's just my personal view. If you differ, I respect your right to do so and wish you the very best with whatever decision you make. My personal takeaway from this association has simply been a reminder of the old adage: "Never judge a book by its cover."

A Scientific Invitation I Regret Accepting

A few months ago I gave an invited talk at Vivekananda Institute for Professional Studies (VIPS) in New Delhi. Here's the link to a recording of the same: https://youtu.be/rmwShd0EALI

And the very next day an old friend from my IIT Mumbai days calls me after years and gives me an earful (it's really weird to be scolded once you've been a prof for some time!) about not being careful enough with where I allow myself to get invited.

I suppose the article above featuring their chairman is open to interpretation as all matters have not been settled in the courts yet, and your conclusions might well be different from mine. I respect that totally. Mine lead to a decision to stay away from VIPS.

Sorry, I'll be more careful in the future.

No further comments.

Introducing Tenure Track In Indian Academia: A Case Study In Insincerity

I hear a lot of people talk about introducing the tenure track system in Indian universities. It will not succeed for the following two reasons:

1. We don't understand what the tenure track system is :)! Universities in USA give their incoming assistant professors very generous research start-up grants to start setting up their laboratories (and of course give them space to set up their laboratories :)!), fund at least a couple of PhD students and post-docs to work under them, keep teaching loads very reasonable (~3 courses per year), understand that the first few years are to "build", and extend every service and resource possible to enable excellent research progress. With all this in place, the assistant professor is evaluated after about seven years on all three parameters: teaching, research and service. If found suitable, he/she is promoted to associate professor with tenure (permanent appointment). If not, they have to seek a position elsewhere.

Most Indian universities (even most of the "elite" ones) will keep an incoming assistant professor thirsty on almost every resource he/she needs, yet insist on a significant output :)! The situation is of course worse in private universities. Its common to see teaching loads as high as Harvey Mudd (a purely undergraduate college with a high teaching load of five courses per year!), limited exceptions aside - quality PhD students and post-docs are in general mere pipe dreams at most universities in India, lab space and start up grants are miserly (at some places still unheard of!), sometimes even an office and a computer isn't provided, yet, I've heard of places that have incoming assistant professors give a "signed commitment" to publish a certain number of papers per year from Year 1 :)!

This is not tenure tracking :)! This is a dishonest joke :)! As I said right at the start, we don't even understand what tenure-tracking means :)!

2. Universities in USA know when to make exceptions. For example, a university as good as Princeton has been known to hire an exceptionally talented young faculty member directly as a tenured full professor. At another university (U Maryland) a faculty member was offered tenure and promotion just three years into his tenure-track period by a competing university (UM Ann Arbor) - and everyone understood and wished him well when he accepted and moved. When he became a Full Professor, he had published 11 papers - each strong enough to make a dent in his field - that's as clear an example of emphasizing quality over quantity that you'll ever see. His full story is covered here: Strike a Pause: Excellence In Education is Not As Easy As 1, 2, 3... :) (strike-a-pause.blogspot.com).

We do not understand all this. We have rules and forms and bureaucratic requirements that will put everyone thoughtlessly through the same washer and drier :). And changing universities to move up is considered as a sign of "weak commitment" - how convenient :)!

Its best if we don't try to blindly ape the west. Instead, lets grow up and start conducting ourselves a bit more maturely and with more commonsense than we do today. Then many possible ways to improve ourselves will come to our minds which will actually be effective. Otherwise just blind aping and making noise will sink us in quicksand. That damage is permanent!

United We Stand, Divided We Fall!

I invite you to see this video: Pakistan need 14 runs from 11 balls against india | 2004 | WHO GONNA WIN - YouTube

These two overs of Indian bowling and fielding don't just exemplify excellence in the field, they also underline another point. And here's how you see it:

Note down the names of our cricketers who bowled these overs, those who took catches, those who saved runs in the field, and those who ran in to celebrate each wicket and eventually the victory.

These few minutes of cricket teach us more about what it will take to become first world than a thousand political speeches.

Nothing more needs to be said.

But let's underline the point just made with one more video: Irfan Pathan Hat-trick vs Pakistan - YouTube

Observe carefully that players of different religions as well as regions are playing together absolutely comfortably and are completely united as a team. Result: We dominate.

This is how this country is, and this is how it will stay. India will NEVER be a Hindu Nation or an Islamic Nation or a Christian Nation or a Buddhist Nation or a Sikh Nation. We are, and will stay, firmly secular. Those who want to live in religion-centric countries are welcome to emigrate to other parts of the world.

The central identity here is simply going to be: Indian. That's it.

(Note: As you reflect on the post above, bear in mind that I have supported the present government every time they acted to cancel minority appeasement freebies (Haj Allowance, PM Iftar Parties, Triple Talaaq). But from 2019 onwards their speeches and IT Cell actively spread hatred against ordinary Muslim citizens. Not only can this not be allowed, it is fundamentally nonsensical. To understand this better, I invite you to read: Strike a Pause: Why Push Away Muslims? (strike-a-pause.blogspot.com))

No Dress Rehearsals!

Remember always: There are no dress rehearsals in life. You are already on the stage and the play is on 🙂. You have to be 100% mindful, 100% alert, 100% committed, moment to moment, as you play your part.

The moment to act is now. The time is now. Whatever it is that you wish to do with your life, the time to start working towards it is now. Right now.

A Four Point Algorithm To Combat Backwardness

We've had caste/class based reservations in education and employment in our country for over one-third of a century. As I often remark caste is an inherently shit concept, an evil weapon that was used to oppress and exploit. And backwardness created consciously needed to be combatted consciously at one point.

However, when a strategy goes wrong it is important to realize (and honestly accept) it. I start this post by giving two concrete examples to illustrate why I believe our present system of caste/class based reservations is causing more harm than good. Then I present an alternate strategy that I believe would be more effective in combatting backwardness than reservations.

Example 1: The cut-off for Mathematics PhD admissions at Delhi University in 2017 was set at 0% for SC/ST candidates. 0%. (Source: https://indianexpress.com/article/education/du-admission-2017-phd-mathematics-cut-off-for-sc-st-at-zero-du-ac-in-shocked-students-take-to-twitter-4780086/)

For General Category: 94%.
For OBC: 84%.

For SC/ST: 0%.

You are free to check the cut-offs for the last 8 years. Whether they have again gone all the way down to 0% or not, I can give you a guarantee sitting right here that you will continue finding SC/ST cut-offs to be unjustifiably low at every level: Bachelors, Masters, PhD.

And since we have reservations in faculty positions as well, those securing admissions with such low marks (in their PhD programs - after having gone through 5+ years of higher education already!) will also become professors and teach the next generation (teach what?).

Example 2. "The minimum marks required to qualify JEE Advanced are 35% for the general category, 31.5% for OBC-NCL/EWS, and 17.5% for SC/ST/PwD candidates." (Source: https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/jee-advanced-cutoff/)

17.5%! And I don't believe SC/ST/PwD even have a Creamy Layer - Non Creamy Layer distinction!

17.5%! What does it even mean to get into IITs/NITs/Etc. with 17.5% marks?

This is not "affirmative action". This is simply politicians selling out for votes and power.

And it's everywhere: doctors, engineers, teachers, professors, scientists...

All this is happening simply because SC/ST folks have been reduced to a vote bank to be milked by politicians (of all parties). This has nothing to do with "affirmative action" or anyone's "upliftment".

If we go on this way, then forget development. Simply forget about it. Instead, anticipate collapse. When a society agrees to become intellectually dishonest to suit its politics, it collapses. (Of course, instead of correcting course, the present lot of politicians is busy creating a new vote bank to be exploited for political gain - women - by implementing gender based reservations!)

I present an alternate strategy for your consideration:

Here is a four point algorithm to combat backwardness that I believe will bring equality in our society more effectively than reservations based on caste, class, tribe, religion or gender. Please bear in mind that all four points have to be assimilated together as a consolidated approach.

As you read and reflect on the following points, bear in mind clearly that at the end of the day, there is only one kind of backwardness: Poverty.

Here goes:

Completely irrespective of caste, class, religion or gender:

1. At the end of 12th grade, for any student hailing from a home whose net family income is Rs. 25,000/- per month or less, add 15% to his or her Grade 12 score for admission into college.

2. Make sure all such students get free education all the way till their bachelors degree.

(If you set the family income bar any higher, the effectiveness of this boost for people who really need it the most will reduce.)

3. Let there be a law that the distribution of students in classrooms/hostels and their seating/residential arrangements be completely independent of caste, class, tribe, religion or economic status. This will help shatter any notions of higher and lower that might be present in any student's mind and we'll bring forth generations of youth who simply relate with each other as fellow human beings.

4. Let there be extra classes in the evening for anyone who might need extra coaching or help with their studies at every level: school as well as college. If extra teachers need to be hired for this purpose, it should be done.

That's it. With this one time boost (Points 1 & 2), let needy students then compete with everyone else on an equal footing (Points 3 & 4). No more affirmative action for either post graduate equation or employment. You get a one time boost to get into college, it is then incumbent upon you to work hard and make the best of it.

We do this and all politics being played around caste, class, religion and gender, simply stops. Each and every politician, from each and every political party, will then be forced to talk poverty eradication and development. No more vote bank / divide and rule politics - the entire system starts cleaning up - and those who really need help finally get it!

Always remember: At the end of the day, there is only one kind of backwardness: Poverty. If we help children and youth hailing from poor families as explained above, we will combat backwardness in a positive manner, while building merit by helping people improve and become nationally and globally competitive.

The pressing question now of course is how do we make a transition from the present scenario to the scenario depicted above? In my view, it can be done in the following two steps:

1. Immediate Change: Jobs that directly impact human safety and future generations (examples: medical, some engineering tasks, teaching future generations, flying aircraft, etc.) should work on pure merit. There should be absolutely no reservations of any kind for such jobs - not even on regional considerations (example: Punjabis in Punjab, Marathis in Maharashtra, etc.). Needless to say, gender simply cannot be a reason for reservation at all. Else, stop all talk of gender equality. It's plain hypocrisy.

2. Five Year Transition: In all other sectors, start reducing reservations by 10% every year. Alongside, start implementing the four point algorithm above. If we do this, in five years we would have replaced reservations with the method outlined above and combat backwardness more effectively. This mandate needs to come into force as a "center + state requirement" that is binding not just on the center, but all states as well. The reason is this: Reservations in any state will lead to workforce migrations to other states and disrupt employment there. For any states that presently have more than 50% reservations, the annual percentage reduction in reservations needs to adjusted such that the five year target is met. For example, if some state has 70% reservations the annual percentage reduction needs to be 14%.

The above steps will need to be ordered by a body higher than our political class, say, the Supreme Court. If left to politicians, we'll never see a change because, barring a very few, most are simply interested in power and will pursue appeasement strategies to attain it.
